Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) conducted a R.I.D.E spot check in the City of Niagara Falls this Victoria long weekend where out of hundreds of vehicles stopped,  one driver was arrested and another given a second warning— both had their vehicles towed and seized for seven days.

On Saturday (May. 20) police ran overnight R.I.D.E. spot checks in the City of Niagara Falls.

Police reportedly stopped 400 vehicles and inquired if any of the drivers had consumed alcohol or drugs earlier that evening.

A dozen drivers were required to provide a sample of their breath for analysis.

One of the selected drivers that had provided a sample failed the screening and subsequently was arrested, police said.

Another driver ended up providing a sample in the warning range, but as it was their second warning, they received a seven-day suspension.

Both drivers also had their vehicle towed and seized for a period of  seven days.

Police further discovered that one of the stopped drivers were failed o comply with conditions on their release order and will likely face additional criminal charges.

According to police, they continue to stay committed to reducing impaired driving offences through education and the apprehension of offenders through enforcement programs like R.I.D.E.

Officers say impaired driving remains the leading criminal offence causing death in Canada. This initiative has been made possible, in part, because of grant funding from the Ministry of the Solicitor General as part of the Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (R.I.D.E) program.
