With the regular season ticking down, the Welland Jackfish got a big night from Matteo Porcellato, who became the first-ever in team history to hit for the cycle.
Going 4-for-5 at the plate with six RBIs, Porcellato knocked in a single, double, triple and homer in a convincing 19-4 win over the Hamilton Cardinals at Welland Stadium last night (August 18).
Hamilton was up 4-0 until Welland smashed out 19 consecutive runs.
The win was a key one as the Jackfish sit at 29-11 on the season with two games left, just one game behind the London Majors at 30-10. Nipping at the Jackfish heels are Guelph Royals at 28-11.
There will be a fight for first place as the top team will face the 2-37 Brantford Red Sox in the Intercounty Baseball League opening round.
Porcellato crushed his final college season with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics’ Marian University Knights in Indianapolis with a .380 batting average, while slugging .625 and posting a .496 on base percentage.
The 6-foot-2, 195-pound player has said he would like to remain with the Jackfish for next season.
