Welland Mayor’s Wednesday walks on Merritt Island are back this week

Long absent due to COVID-19, Welland Mayor Frank Campion will kickstart his Mayor’s Walk on Merritt Island every Wednesday, beginning at 8 am. It’s back on October 6.

A tradition of Campion’s since 2016, the walks will last roughly 40 minutes and those participating are warned they “should dress for the weather with appropriate clothing and footwear.”

“We promote being active and it’s always good when you can walk the talk,” said Campion, who noted the walks are cancelled in severe weather.

“Walking and getting some fresh air is a great way to start the day,” Campion added. “Inviting the community to join is an opportunity to discuss what’s happening in the city and how it affects the shortand long-term vision of the city.”

Campion said that bringing the mayor’s walk back into the fold in 2021 hits on two of council’s strategic priorities: (The activity was shut down in 2020 and is now just starting in 2021.)

“There are many important issues that face our community and many important decisions that will come as a result,” Campion said. “Being able to engage with residents about what affects them and what they have at the top of their mind helps create a more fulsome debate when it comes to policy and decision-making.”
