What's open an closed in Oshawa, Pickering and Whitby

There is little point in explaining what is open this coming Monday, September 19 in St. Catharines, Welland, Niagara Falls and the remainder of Niagara Region because it’s a holiday for federal workers only.

Last week, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau created the holiday for federal workers to honour the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. He left it up to the provinces to decide whether or not to follow suit. Ontario chose not to.

While that seems like a small slice of the workforce pie, it will involve a few places that some people might expect to be open.

All banks, region-wide, will be open.

WHAT’S CLOSED:

  • Every Canada Post building in the Niagara Region will be closed and there will be no mail delivery. However, a Canada Post media relations person told us that the kiosks at the back of Shopper’s Drug Mart or other pharmacy outlets could decide for themselves whether or not to be open on Monday.
  • Every Service Canada Centre, traditionally where people go for passports and other federal issues, such as unemployment payments, will be closed. In Niagara Region, there are four.
  • In St. Catharines, there are two Service Canada Centres – 395 Ontario Street E & F and Pen Centre, 221 Glendale Ave, Entrance 5 (near Landmark Cinema)
  • In Welland, there is one Service Canada Centre – 250 Thorold Rd
  • In Niagara Falls, there is one Service Canada Centre – 6080 McLeod Rd
